Gathering/Living off the land...
Saturday was wood splitting at our place
Stella even helped gather the wood.
Plenty of wood for winter - what a great feeling.
Stella was a great help.
I really must stop wrecking my tee shirts...
Abbey was not pleased with me asking to take a photo, she has been on the day bed since Tuesday in a bad crash again. SOB!. Abbey thought I had picked her some berries so was quite vocal on her disgust. But was a good sport and took the photo for me LOL.
The chickens lined up for their tasty treats.
They wait eagerly by the shoot for me to place one huhu bug at a time. As the huhu bug lands down the shoot the chicken cluck with delight.
The sunflower has opened - she is soo tall one can't really see the flower smile.

beautiful, healthy cats! :)
ReplyDeletelove your helpful pup, too! as a kid growing up in wisconsin, my father cut wood every summer and we kids helped pile, throw, stack, cut, whatever for the winter. :)
Yes the cats are all healthy - their coat show it doesn't it.
DeleteLots of work gathering wood for the winter but a satisfying role.

Hello Leanne - and many thanks for stopping by via Claudia's cottage! Well what can I say..........I love NZ although I've only been to Auckland to board a ship in 2010 and sail way to the beautiful NZ sub-Antarctic Islands! My dream is to return and see NZ in detail and travel everywhere possible across your two beautiful islands.........one of these days I'll get there.
ReplyDeleteLove your beautiful kitties...........and reading about your lifestyle in the country.
Have a wonderful weekend as you prepare for the cooler weather coming your way soon.
Mary -
Mary - it is on my bucket list since I was 14 years old to travel in a house truck around New Zealand. Soon I hope!
DeleteHope you get to come back to New Zealand.

That is a seriously good wood splitter. The shoot for feeding titbits to the the chooks is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteSusan - totally worth every penny to hire the wood splitter. Yes James' design of chicken feeder works really well.

Thanks for visiting my blog today and now that I have visited YOURS I am just smiling in delight...you have so much stuff going on in the one or two posts that I visited ! :) So much FUN to visit here! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Debra, the blog is just a journal of our days and of the cats staying with us. It can be a bit random at times LOL

You look like you have quite a bit of land & with your own pinetrees for fire wood?
ReplyDeleteStella the wonderful helper. We had a truck load of wood delivered yesterday, so bit by bit it will get stacked into the shed.......oh I am looking forward to winter, the fire, soup, snuggling under a quilt.....pure bliss!
It must be lovely to get to see your 'babies' happy at their new homes.
Leeanne we have just over 3 acres. The trees are all on the neigbours property and are very tall. I did mention again how I would love the ones behind the barn gone. but it is a huge job for the neighbours to chop the trees they have got too big. Any that fall over our side of the fence are I bags. And I collect the pinecones - and always laugh at myself how I HAVE to reach over to the neighbours through the barb wire fence to get any pinecones on their side within my reach.
DeleteI prefer summer, spring and autumn - not a fan of winter at all. too cold.
Yes it is lovely to have the cats come and stay - I am enjoying it. BUT missing breeding very much.

And who was the unsuspecting person who said " You are so lucky to have trees, wood and a fire!! " Let them work, all of it is hard labour, but like us, in the cold days, we will all so enjoy it, and you will have another fire to stoke, the " POT BELLY " who will want a full tummy to heat your bath water!!!! LOvely to see the other photos, greetings from Jean
ReplyDeleteOh It is hard work. Even just picking up[ pinecone after pinecone walking up steep banks and watching your back from the ram...

Love all your favorite things, so much fun! Stella is a cutie! Wish I could have chickens.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend filled with your favorite things!
Sally Annie, I have way too many favourite things living here.
DeleteStella is cute and has a very big important day today.

Looks like a really productive day splitting the wood. What a great help Stella was. Does she cuddle up by the fire in winter? Maybe she knows if she helps now that she reaps the benefits later down the track?
ReplyDeleteI have to say that Amber is one beautiful looking cat. I take it all the family of cats get on well when they come to stay. Such a beautiful quiet, peaceful place, I have no doubt that they would.
Stella is not a year old yet, she likes to be a lap dog - will be interesting in the winter if she prefers laps over fire. (NB It is never my lap - I'm still not a dog person)
DeleteThe cats when boarding never get to mix with other guests. We have separate rooms for each family. The four boys staying at the moment are all from one family.
Feel free to recommend us to owners who cherich their cats.

Lots of wood splitting going on here too! Those grubs are called whichity grubs here. (not sure on spelling ) the aboriginal tribes of Australia eat them, apparently they re full of protein. I haven't had the guts to try them so I cannot report on how they tast. But our chickens love them.
ReplyDeleteIn NZ they are called huhu grubs and yes are eaten here too. I am told they taste like peanut butter and the smaller ones are best. Not that I have been brave enough to but Brent and James did one year. The chickens LOBE them and I must admit I enjoy sending one huhu grub at a time down the shute to the waiting chicken. Naughty huhu grubs were eating our firewood...
